About the National Program for Sustainable Irrigation

The National Program for Sustainable Irrigation (NPSI) invests in research into and adoption of sustainable irrigation practices.

The NPSI program collaborates with government and primary producer bodies and has been responsible for improved irrigation scheduling and application techniques. For many irrigators this has resulted in reduction of 40% or more of their water use over the last 20 years without loss of production.

The program is researching ways of coping with:

  • water scarcity
  • salinity and other soil factors
  • irrigation and nutritional requirements
  • biodiversity and production
  • plant physiology and water requirements
  • the economics of irrigation

Beneficiaries have included a range of irrigation enterprises including rice, grain, cotton, vegetables, tree fruits, nuts, grapes, sugar, dairying and livestock. These irrigated industries account for more than a third of the nation’s total gross value of agricultural production, so are significant to Australia’s economy.
